The College School, an independent school for grades Pre-K through grade 8, has launched a new Upper Division Diversity Scholarship for students of color who are entering fourth through seventh grades. The scholarship award will include up to 100 percent of tuition and fees for the student's time enrolled at the school.
"Diversity encompasses gender, race, sexual orientation, age, ability and so much more," said Tiffany Khang, Director of Equity & Inclusion at The College School. "With that, our specific focus for this scholarship is to increase racial diversity, with the goal of bringing more students of color into our unique program."
The College School focuses on experiential education, leadership, collaboration, critical thinking skills, and believes that some of the most valuable lessons can be found in an arduous, yet safe, outdoor education curriculum. Students explore the world through authentic experiences and are part of a close-knit community that allows them to be who they are and to use their voice.
In a statement, school officials stressed the importance of racially diverse classrooms in which students can better appreciate and consider different perspectives. "They're able to make connections from their own lives to the lives of their peers. Racial diversity fosters awareness and empathy where students learn to take on the world through advocacy, compassion, and global understanding."
"Since our school was established in 1963, we have build a community where all voices are valued and differences are celebrated," said Carl Pelofsky, Head of School at The College School. "The Upper Divison Diversity Scholarship is an opportunity for us to continue our work of building a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive community."
Applications are due January 29, 2021, for the 2021-2022 school year. To apply, families will complete an application, and the student applicants will submit a short essay and participate in an interview.
