Fall has officially arrived. How do I know? Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back at Starbucks. Another sure sign of September is the annual Great Forest Park Balloon Race. The party kicks off on Friday night with one of St. Louis’ favorite gatherings, the Balloon Glow. During this uber-popular event, thousands of people hit Central Field in Forest Park to enjoy the breathtaking (and up close) views of burners illuminating inflated balloons. The event wraps up around 9 p.m. with a fireworks finale.
The excitement continues on Saturday with the 39th Annual Balloon Race.
At high noon, 70 “hound” balloons will launch in pursuit of the beloved Energizer Bunny Hot “Hare” Balloon. The balloon dropping a birdseed baggie closest to the Bunny Balloon wins the race. In addition to the balloon race, kids can enjoy pony rides, games, local talent and other fun activities in The Purina Children's Entertainment area. Get ready to “ohhh” and “ahhh” as the skydiving team thrills crowds with a death-defying performance at 3 p.m.
Don’t forget to clean up your camera’s hard drive so you can take lots of pictures for the Photo Contest. It’s a great opportunity to enter the field and take pictures of your favorite balloons. Prizes will be awarded for the best photographs in a variety of age groups. Details of the contest are still being ironed out, so check the website for all the specifics.
In honor of the Energizer Bunny’s 20th birthday, here are a few fun facts about the big rabbit. The Energizer Bunny Hot “Hare” Balloon is the tallest one in the country. Standing at 166 feet, it’s 15 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty! His ears alone are as tall as the Presidents’ faces on Mount Rushmore. Twenty crew members are needed to facilitate safe inflation, take-off and landing of this monster balloon. A regular round balloon only needs about five people.
The Balloon Glow is taking place on Central Field from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, September 16. The Great Forest Park Balloon Race is being held on Saturday, September 17 from noon to 6:30 p.m. in Central Field. Admission to these events is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Muny Parking lot, but arrive early because spots are at a premium. For more information, visit The Great Forest Park Balloon Race’s website.
